Pathway To X Games

In conjunction with ESPN and the X Games Ski Athlete Selection Committee, the Association of Freeskiing Professionals is pleased to offer all athletes an exclusive look at the proverbial pathway to obtaining an invite to the most prestigious event of the year, X Games Aspen.

While the following guidelines are not formally set in stone, and are subject to change as per the discretion of the selection committee, below are the dates that each wave of X Games invited athletes will be announced, along with which events impact how those athletes are chosen.

First Round

On November 17th, 2014, the following number of athletes will be invited…

• 8 of the 16 available spots for Men's Slopestyle.
• 8 of the 16 available spots for Men's Halfpipe.
• 4 of the 8 available spots for Women's Slopestyle.
• 4 of the 8 available spots for Women's Halfpipe.
• 6 of the 10 available spots for Men's Big Air.

These invites will be based largely on the current AFP Rankings, with a primary focus on athlete performances during the 2013/2014 AFP World Tour. It's also worth noting that the committee annually reserves the first three spots in all ski disciplines for the top three finishers in each discipline at last year's installment of X Games.

Second Round

On January 3rd, 2015, the following number of athletes will be invited…

• 6 of the remaining 8 spots for Men's Slopestyle + 2 alternates.
• 6 of the remaining 8 spots for Men's Halfpipe + 1 alternate.
• 3 of the remaining 4 spots for Women's Slopestyle + 1 alternate.
• 3 of the remaining 4 spots for Women's Halfpipe + 1 alternate.
• The 4 remaining spots for Men's Big Air + 2 alternates.

These invites will be based largely on the AFP Rankings at the time, with a primary focus on athlete performances at the two AFP Platinum-ranked events that take place during the month of December: the USSA Grand Prix at Copper Mountain, Colorado (Halfpipe only) and Dew Tour at Breckenridge, Colorado (Slopestyle and Halfpipe), along with discretionary consideration for those who were 'below the bubble' during the committee's first round of selections. In addition, the committee will select tentative alternates for Slopestyle and Halfpipe on this date (where as Big Air's alternates will be confirmed at this point), with the option of inviting those athletes during the third round of selections.

Third Round

On January 13th, 2015, the following number of athletes will be invited…

• The 2 remaining spots for Men's Slopestyle.
• The 2 remaining spots for Men's Halfpipe.
• The 1 remaining spot for Women's Slopestyle.
• The 1 remaining spot for Women's Halfpipe.

Once again, these invites will be based largely on the AFP Rankings at the time, with a possibility of discretionary picks from the committee and/or previously selected alternates being bumped up and new alternates being selected.
