Major AFP World Tour Rankings Update

Dec 6, 2017

Hello from the Association of Freeskiing Professionals,

Now that the 2018 AFP World Tour is underway, with two Platinum-Level and two Gold-Level events in the bag, we wanted to update all of you on the status of this season’s AFP World Tour Rankings.

As many of you know, over the course of the summer, we formed a committee of athletes and coaches to explore ways in which we could alter the formula of this year’s rankings. The new system will be very similar to the World Snowboarding Points List, where rankings points will be awarded based on a strength of field formula. This will be the case for all events—the better the field, the more points you’ll earn. A full and detailed description will be published once all of the pieces are in place.

While we have agreed on a new system for the future, we need to ensure that it is implemented and launched properly and fairly, which means having a full season of competitions and results. Therefore, for the 2017/2018 season, we will be running this new points system “behind the scenes” until June 2018, when we will officially switch over. As a result, this season’s rankings formula and points will be the same as it has been for the past few seasons.

On the heels of this, we wanted to let you know that we have updated the rankings with results from the following events…

• Winter Games NZ (Slopestyle & Halfpipe) - Platinum
• FIS Freeski World Cup Milan (Big Air) - Gold
• Canadian Open Tour: Mt. Sima (Slopestyle & Big Air) - Silver
• FIS Freeski World Cup Stubai (Slopestyle) - Platinum
• FIS Freeski World Cup Moenchengladback (Big Air) - Gold

Just to be clear, this rankings update was done based on our existing formula and rankings system, and is not the new formula.

In lieu of us releasing a standard rankings update for the above events, we felt this information was more important, and therefore should take precedent, so be sure to check out the current rankings at afpworldtour.com/rankings to see where you stand heading into the heart of the season.

Note that if you do not see your name in the rankings, that’s because your AFP membership is not currently active. To renew your membership, simply go to afpworldtour.com/register, and your results and rankings will be visible. As our Executive Director Eric Zerrenner stated in a video that was emailed to you a few weeks back, we will be sanctioning every FIS event and every “independent” event as a part of this year’s AFP World Tour, which will make the AFP World Tour Rankings the most accurate and comprehensive rankings in freeskiing… but it will only be accurate and all-inclusive if all of you are a part of it. So please, take five minutes and active your membership for the season.

Be on the look out for another video with more elaborate information on the rankings, and on behalf of all of us at the AFP, we’d like to wish you the very best of luck this season.
