FIS World Championships Announcement

On this year's AFP World Tour, it is no secret that a scheduling conflict exists amongst next week's X Games in Aspen, Colorado and the FIS World Championships in Kreischberg, Austria.

Due to the absence of FIS World Championships on the AFP World Tour Calendar, many have asked if this scheduling conflict has meant that the AFP is unwilling to sanction the FIS World Championships. This is not the case. Although the AFP has yet to receive an application from the event organizers for AFP sanctioning, we're pleased to report that the freeskiing community has made a significant effort to gather the necessary information to complete the AFP sanctioning requirements for this event.

After receiving feedback from athletes and the freeskiing community at large on this subject, the AFP believes that adding the FIS World Championships to the AFP World Tour Calendar is in the best interest of the athletes. After all, two of the AFP’s directives are “To foster positive communication between athletes and the events,” as well as “To guide the sport of freeskiing in the best way possible for the sport and for the athletes.” We believe this decision is in accordance with both of these directives.

Therefore, the AFP is happy to announce that the FIS World Championships will be sanctioned at the Gold level. The Platinum-level X Games is still considered the premiere event at this time for our sport.
